Hiking sounds like such a simple activity yet a lot of families avoid it when they have little ones because of the hassle that it implies. But hiking with kids can be such an amazing and rewarding experience if it’s done right. We are a hiking family and even though it hasn’t always been easy, we have learned with time to do it right. Here are some tips:
️. Take the time to do some research and choose short walks. We recommend no more than 3 miles or 4.5 kilometers.
️. Dress appropriately. Special mountain hiking clothes and shoes are usually expensive, but look at them as an investment. Make sure they have lightweight, waterproof pants, comfortable socks and fitted hiking shoes so they are comfortable and safe. We like brands like REI and Merrell.
️. The little ones can go too! There is no excuse for babies and toddlers not to be able to accompany you on your hikes. On the contrary, it is one of the most beautiful experiences! Make sure you invest in comfortable equipment for you and them, too. We recommend backpacks or carrier bags like the ones from Osprey Packs or similar.
️. Pack the essentials. For us it’s rain jackets in case it rains, thermos with enough water for everyone, healthy snacks like nuts, dried fruits, granola bars, even a nut butter and jam sandwich is one of our favorites and the perfect reward when you get to the top of the mountain or halfway up the trail.
️. Teach them about nature. Take time to stop and look at the flowers, the rocks, the animals, all the wonderful nature they will cross. This way they will learn from a young age to enjoy and respect it.
